Turning dreams into soundscapes

Like dreams that blur the line between “real-life” and another kind of consciousness, this workshop is an invitation to listen more fully.
In this two-part course, you will use material from dreams to guide the listener’s ears around metaphor, abstract image, or even as translated scripts to create small but elaborate audio gems. We’ll leave aside concerns about impartiality and truth-telling in order to explore adventurous sound design and story-making.
We’ll listen to dream-related sonic works for a sense of approach, to imagine who might be listening, and to see how abstract or semi-fictional scenes can augment a linear story. Between sessions, you will mix your ideas into a short scene (five minutes or less). In the second session, we’ll closely listen as a group and offer feedback.
You should plan to arrive with recorded material, such as voiced dream recollections of your own or others; metaphoric sounds; or a theme to explore based on a remembered phrase or word.
Class will meet for two Wednesday sessions at 1pm EST, beginning September 23rd. The second session meets Wednesday, September 30th.
*This class is capped at 12
