Getting out in the field is one of the true delights of producing audio stories. Away from computer screens, face-to-face with your subjects, you can immerse your audience in the sounds of the story. But what exactly should be recorded? How do you come back with useful audio? How do you capture the sounds of a place? How do you keep everything straight?!

In this workshop, trainer, consultant, and audio engineer Rob Byers will walk through techniques for recording stories in the field. The class will cover topics like planning, capturing scenes, prioritizing which sounds to record, organization, managing equipment, stereo recording, and avoiding common problems. We’ll also talk through different equipment setups for recording interviews in the field, how a pre-interview can impact the sounds you record, and whether you should capture multiple perspectives of a scene. You will walk away with ideas and practices you can immediately put to use in your next outing.

Who's this class for?

The class is designed for anyone interested in field recording. Previous experience with recording equipment and audio production concepts is highly recommended.
