Help with story-structure snags

Story editing is one of my passions. I consider the maker the best editor of their work. But we hugely benefit from another set of ears.

I listen in numerous ways: as a one-pass, distracted listener; then with more nuanced attention, asking: who is this piece intended for? Are you reaching them in too-obvious ways? How can you keep them focused, but also surprised?

We will explore the structure of your project—where best to offer narration (or not), listen for more effective tape edits, and your voice tone. We will consider if the story is better offered without narration and let compelling field sounds, even abstractly, share in some of the storytelling beyond music layers.

Finally, I can explore where your work may engage different audiences beyond public radio and podcasting realms, into pop-up radio festivals and online-only events, with both themed and open calls for curious listeners, makers, and programmers.

About Joan Schuman

I make creative radio—short works and series inviting listeners into poetic narratives that consider wars and complicity; animal-human entanglements; and the grief of human-driven climate chaos. My work airs internationally on the radio, at sound festivals, and across online genres and experiments through podcasting. Since 2004, I’ve been teaching graduate students to be their own best editor (online through New School/Parson’s programming); undergraduate students engage around the history of radio and other platforms of listening, and more recently, how media spins climate collapse across contemporary and historical apocalypse narratives, creating their own multi-media newsletters.

She is clearly incredibly knowledgeable and extremely generous in sharing that knowledge.
