To learn to write for podcasting you often have to throw out all of the rules you’ve spent a lifetime learning. This introductory workshop will give you the new skills you need to get started.

Writing for podcasts is different than writing for print. One is writing for the ear and the other for the eye. To see how different, just pick up a copy of a newspaper and read it out loud. The difference is so extreme, you often have to throw all the rules you’ve spent a lifetime learning and start from scratch.

In this 2 part, online workshop award-winning audio journalist Sally Herships will introduce you to the basic principles of the craft of writing for the ear. In the first session you’ll learn how to write with and for tape, how to use your voice as a tool and about the importance of the host intro. You’ll get an introduction to different styles and formats, do hands-on exercises, and learn mistakes to avoid. You’ll receive a short homework assignment and during the second session you’ll share it as part of a group critique and receive feedback on your work. Whether you want to write long-form or short, news or narrative, this workshop will give you the skills you need to get started.

  • Class is capped at 12 and will meet for two Saturday sessions at 12pm EST, beginning Saturday, September 24th.
  • Registration comes with a free, three-month license for Hindenburg audio editing software
  • You will receive a Zoom link for the workshop the day before it begins.
