Video podcasts are everywhere, but making one that looks sharp, sounds great, and actually connects with an audience takes more than just hitting record. In this 2.5-hr crash course, you’ll learn the building blocks for a professional approach, whether you’re planning a solo show, a co-hosted chatcast, or a guest-driven interview format. Most importantly, you’ll get a sense of the level of effort and tradeoffs offered by different approaches.

We’ll cover principles for a full production workflow: setup/prep, gear recommendations, recording, editing full episodes, editing vertical clips for social, and more. We’ll also touch on more advanced topics, like workflows for multiple audio/video cuts and optimal packaging for platforms.

You’ll leave the class with increased knowledge and confidence to build a repeatable approach to a polished video podcast that works for your show, budget, and format.

About Your Instructor

Nick Michael

Nick Michael is an editorial leader with over a decade’s experience scaling video content strategies for platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. He’s currently the supervising editor for visuals at NPR, and in his 10 years there, he’s helped transform a lot of audio-first content into video-also content. These include:

  • Building a framework for high-profile video interviews with figures like Barack Obama, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Bono (45m lifetime views across platforms!)
  • Co-leading a trial year of publishing NPR podcasts to YouTube (3000 eps!)
  • Designing content strategy and product design for Wild Card, NPR’s first regular video podcast
  • Leading a working group on Riverside and news magazines
